There has been a "museum" in the Queensland Police since 1893 when Commissioner O'Sullivan called for "articles connected with crime (and) suicide..." to be forwarded to his office for a "Criminal or Police Museum"...

Since September 1990 when the building was completed.

The QPS was inaugurated on 1 January 1864 and the first Police Commissioner was David Thomson Seymour.

Where is the Museum?Back to top

We are located on the Ground Floor of Police Headquarters at 200 Roma Street in Brisbane city. To find us come up the front steps of the building, turn right and then left.

How can I get to the Museum?Back to top

Travelling by train may be the easiest option for some, as the museum is opposite Roma Street Railway Station. Paid parking is also available across the road at the Transit Centre. Please note that if you intend coming by chartered bus, there is no bus parking available around Police Headquarters. Buses generally drop groups off at the front or side of the building and then park elsewhere.

Who can visit the QPM?Back to top

Everyone is welcome. The content is suitable for most age groups (Year 5 to Adult) but some material may not be appropriate for very young children.

Can I book a guided tour?Back to top

We cannot guide groups around the museum due to space limitations within the display areas but we do offer short informative talks to groups of 20 or more. Talks are held only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and bookings are essential.

How much time will I need to see the Museum?Back to top

We suggest a casual visit time of 2 or more hours. Groups are booked in for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

When is the museum open?Back to top

We are open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Unfortunately we are not open on the weekends but you can organise an After Hours Tour with a police officer, please call the museum for details.

If I make a booking for a school group, are there any education materials to complement the visit?Back to top

We have educational support materials designed for upper primary, Forensic Science and Legal Studies students and these are linked to the school curriculum. After you make your booking we can Email, fax or send them to you. These materials are also suitable for general interest groups.

What does the museum display?Back to top

We have 25 displays that illustrate the workings of the Queensland Police from 1864 to the present day. Amongst other things, you can see evidence from Brisbane crimes and Queensland murders; old firearms used by country police; learn about different transport options used by the Queensland Police and solve a murder in our Crime Scene.

There are no eating facilities within Police Headquarters but there are ample choices across the road at the Transit Centre as well as a Cafe and Hotel just up the road.

Yes we house a research library, archive and photograph collection. Access to the information contained here is made by appointment.
