Signature Cloths: An exhibition
May 1 - June 30 | 8:00am - 5:00pm| $8
The current display at Miegunyah House Museum shows some of the textile treasures of The Queensland Women’s Historical Association (QWHA).
Signature cloths were a way of raising money or remembering events in time. The five cloths on display have been recognised as a significant part of the collection.
Included is a cloth begun in 1890s by Ida Clifton which has the signatures of notable people such as Nellie Melba and many of the Griffith family.
Amy Charles was a student at Brisbane Girls High School (later Somerville House) in 1912 when she embroidered the names of her classmates on a cloth.
Mrs Falconer Hutton collected the signatures of over 500 people (at 2 shillings each) and embroidered them in black. The money contributed to the QWHA Centenary project of placing plaques on significant buildings and places.
Exhibition curated by Sue Morrison and Robert McAllister.
